FAMILY AND KIDDIE FILMS FROM 20TH CENTURY FOX IN 2013

20th Century Fox goes epic this 2013 with its family-oriented films infused with the latest breakthroughs in movie technology to make the most unforgettable movie viewing experience.

a scene from life of pi_

From the shelves, acclaimed bestselling books “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, “The Leaf Men and The Brave Good Bugs” by William Joyce and Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” translate into screens and bring to life characters and places nurtured in the deepest alleys of the mind.

life of pi

“Life of Pi” in 3D is a film from Ang Lee that tells the survival of a young boy named Pi Patel (played by newcomer Suraj Sharma) at sea for 227 days with a wild Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Following the loss of his family in a shipwreck, Pi struggles to survive with the tiger in a lifeboat on a perilous voyage across the Pacific.

EPIC

“Epic” in 3D is lifted from pages of “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs” starring the voices of Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Steven Tyler, Beyonce Knowles, Christoph Waltz and Pitbull. Directed by Chris Wedge from the worldwide hit “Ice Age” series, “Epic” follows a girl who has been magically transported into an unknown deep forest revealing a hidden world unlike any other. “Epic” tells the story of a battle raging all around us between the forces of good, who protect nature, and the forces of evil, who wish to see it destroyed. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and unique characters to save their world…and ours.

Poseidon’s teenage son Percy Jackson is back starring Logan Lerman who goes in the deepest of seas in “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” to find the Mythical Golden Fleece. The son of Poseidon, continues his journey to fulfill his destiny along with his friends to save Camp Half-Blood from monsters. Returning cast includes Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan and Kevin McKidd.

“Parental Guidance” spins into a heartwarming chaos when left with their grandkids, Artie and Diane employ unexpected tactics which means using some new parenting style to help teach their grandkids how to act and behave like kids.

20th Century Fox also releases inspiring 3D animation from DreamWorks lot - “The Croods” and “Turbo” are about changing the pace of history and destiny with courage amidst the odds.

RyanReynolds as Guy in THE CROODSReynolds as Guy THECROODS

“The Croods” is a prehistoric 3D comedy adventure that takes us back to the beginning of time. In a previously undiscovered era known as the Croodacious – we find the Crood family when Mother Nature was still experimenting and the flora and fauna we know today hasn’t evolved yet. The Crood family, led by Grug (voiced by Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage), an over-protective father who, like all dads, is doing all he can to hold his family together at a time when cataclysmic changes are happening. Together with his wife (Catherine Keener), kids (Emma Stone and Clark Duke) and ornery mother-in-law (Cloris Leachman) in tow, Grug guides his family through this spectacular environment, full of amazing creatures, to find a new cave to call home. Along the way, they encounter Guy (Ryan Reynolds), an imaginative and resourceful newcomer who takes risks and wholeheartedly embraces the promise of tomorrow.

turbo

“Turbo” tells the story of an ordinary garden snail who goes for his impossible dream to become the greatest racer in the world. Turbo, the ultimate underdog who is obsessed with speed and all things fast has made him an oddity and outsider in the slow and cautious snail community. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make this dream come true. “Turbo’s” all-star voice cast includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson.

"The World from the Side of the Moon" by Phillip Phillips

This is a debut album from season 11 American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips. The album includes Phillip's coronation song, "Home". Phillip Phillips began writing songs with collaborators and recording rough tracks for the album before the American Idol Tour began in July 2012. He collaborated with David Ryan Harris on "Tell Me a Story", which he described as his favorite song in the album and the one he is most proud of. Other songwriters he collaborated with include Greg Holden and Drew Pearson who wrote his coronation song "Home". After the success of this song, Phillips indicated that the album will have a couple of songs similar to "Home". He wrote with his brother-in-law Benjamin Neil "Drive Me", a song he had originally wanted to be his coronation song. His girlfriend Hanna Blackwell also contributed

phillip-phillips-album-cover

lines to the lyrics on the bonus track "Take Me Away". All but three of the tracks on the main album were written or co-written by him, with four of the songs he wrote himself. The album title, The World from the Side of the Moon, come from the lyrics of the first song on the album, "Man on the Moon." Phillips described it as the experience of watching himself in a
DVD of the whole Idol season someone gave him, "so I was kind of watching myself from a whole different world that no one else really knows. It’s interesting to see how it happened and so fast. That's how I picked the title: I felt like I watched myself grow and this whole album is representing where I am."

Eric Bana’s Darkest Hour in “Deadfall”

Eric Bana was first introduced to American audiences in the title role of Mark “Chopper” Read in the feature film Chopper, which premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was then released in the U.S. to critical notice after its Australian success. Bana earned awards from the Film Critics Circle of Australia and the Australian Film Institute for his portrayal of Chopper.

39

Bana was seen co-starring in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down as Delta Sergeant First Class Norm “Hoot” Gibson, one of a group of elite U.S. soldiers, opposite Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Tom Sizemore.

Shortly thereafter, Bana starred as the title role of Bruce Banner in Hulk for director Ang Lee and Universal Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics character. He was also featured as Hector the Prince of Troy in Warner Bros.’ Troy. The following year, he starred in Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed Munich, about the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics.

38

In his new film "Deadfall" marks one of Eric Bana's darkest roles in recent memory. In the film, he plays Addison, a heist man who just robbed a casino with his sister (played by Olivia Wilde) near the Canadian border. But when their car is totaled in a blizzard, the two are forced to split up, leading Addison on a murderous rampage as he tries to make the border.

The role required an actor that could paint in shades of grey, who could bring a subtle approach to a mercurial, brutal character. “We were aware that we needed a brilliant actor,” says director Ruzowitzky, “to show these many layers that are in that character, that it’s not a one layer thing, that it’s all on one tone, but all these different sides we see of him.”

Fortunately, Eric Bana read the script and immediately took to the challenge: “Initially my agent thought I was going to be interested in playing Jay more than Addison, but it was Addison that drew me in,” explains Bana. “This is a very dangerous character and I was immediately drawn to the complexities of playing him.”

41

“I don't think it was the dark and twisted part of the character that attracted me, I just think it was a really well written script with really well detailed characters. I don't think I had that many questions for [screenwriter] Zack Dean and [director] Stefan Ruzowitzky after I read the script. Sometimes you read a script and you have a million questions and notes, and I just felt it was so well written that I didn't have any. I think that's the thing that attracted me more so than the fact that it's dark. I know that's always fun, but essentially it was just how good the dialogue was and the structure.”

49

“He’s a very complicated, screwed-up guy,” Bana continues. “Someone who, on the surface, completely has a handle on himself and his sister. As the story progresses, and as our movie heads towards the final act, we discover that he's someone who's not really in as complete control as he would like to believe.”

“Everything about the film felt cool,” enthuses Bana. “The script was one of the coolest things I’d read in a long, long time – if not the coolest thing I’d ever read. The character
was a wonderfully unique opportunity for any actor, so I was very aggressive about clinging on to that opportunity and just doing everything I could to make sure that the film got made.”

‘Deadfall’ is released and distributed by Crystalsky Multimedia Showing on December 5. Nationwide

“LIFE OF PI” A GAME-CHANGING 3D FROM ANG LEE - Starts January 9 2013 in (local) Cinemas

Academy Award winning filmmaker Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) brings to life Yann Martel’s bestselling tome “Life of Pi” in 3d – seamlessly combining CGI and reality into an integrated whole, making it hard for the audience to discern between what is real and animated.

Filmed in India and Taiwan, Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” team - actors and crew have been doing the rounds in various parts of the globe this last quarter of 2012 to introduce a story that was first thought of as unbelievable and ‘unfilmable.’ Lee creates a groundbreaking movie event about Pi, a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with another survivor, a fearsome Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

a scene from LIFEOFPI

a scene from LIFEOFPI

The book, as Yann describes in the first few pages is emblematic of his hunger at a time when he needed direction and purpose for his life. Just like Martel, the book and movie’s protagonist Pi, goes through a transformational journey. The role of Pi, played by newcomer Suraj Sharma never intended to audition who just accompanied his brother at the casting call, was ultimately chosen by Ang Lee’s team among more than 3,000 hopefuls for the lead role. Prior that point in his life, Suraj had been living like a normal teenager. “I was really nervous, especially during the final audition,” he recalls. “I was actually shaking. I talked to Ang for five minutes and he’s got this thing about him: Whoever’s around him, somehow you get really calm. So Ang calmed me down, and we did the scene. I wasn't really happy with what I did because still I had this little bit of nervousness. Ang talked to me for ten minutes, and we did the scene again. I don’t know what happened, but it was pretty much the best work I had done through all the auditions. Everyone in the room looked really happy.”

Likewise, Lee admits that “Life of Pi” is a personal transformational journey for him as well. Known for his fearless helming of new territories, Lee’s movies span all genres making ripples of hits out of challenging materials presented to him. “Life of Pi” is Lee’s first foray into 3D filmmaking, which he envisioned for this story long before “Avatar” hit theaters. He uses that tool to expand the scope of the film, immerse us in Pi’s physical journey, and envelop us in the story’s emotional hold. “I wanted the experience of the film to be as unique as Yann Martel’s book,” says Lee, “and that meant creating the film in another dimension. 3D is a new cinematic language, and in LIFE OF PI it’s just as much about immersing audiences in the characters’ emotional space as it is about the epic scale and adventure.”

anglee and suraj in taiwan for LifeofPi

Ang lee and Suraj in taiwan for Life of Pi

“We searched for a young man who had the innocence to capture our attention, the depth of character to break our hearts, and the physicality needed to embody Pi on his journey,” says Lee. He also marvels at Suraj’s innocence and efforts, noting, “We are all experienced and perhaps a little jaded. Suraj reminded us why we want to make movies. Every day was a miracle.”

In telling Pi’s story, Mr. Lee pushes the boundaries of cutting-edge motion picture technologies. LIFE OF PI represents a moment when the science and art of filmmaking have jumped forward, as it did with the visual effects of “Titanic,” the 3D revolution of “Avatar,” and the CGI work in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” which brought unprecedented emotion and depth to the character of Caesar. And like Caesar, LIFE OF PI’s Richard Parker is a fully-realized, accessible character, whom you’ll believe was actually on that lifeboat with Suraj.”

“Life of Pi” opens this January 9 across the nation from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Jude Law is the wicked bogeyman Pitch in ‘Rise of the Guardians’

Jude Law is considered one of Britain’s finest actors, with a wealth and variety of film and theater performances to his credit.

jude_law_as_pitch_1

Law will star opposite Keira Knightley in Joe Wright’s “Anna Karenina.” Last year, he reunited with Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr., on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” reprising his role from the global boxoffice success “Sherlock Holmes”. In his new animation film in DreamWorks Animations he plays evil entity known as Pitch.

“The Guardians represent hope, joy, wonder and dreams,” producer Christina Steinberg notes. “If Pitch is able to take them out, they will literally cease to exist. The attributes they represent would be gone from the world and fear would reign.”

The way Pitch attempts to do that is by corrupting one of the Guardians’ tools. “He has a huge amount resentment for being shoved under the beds for hundreds of years,” says actor Jude Law, who gives voice to Pitch. “He figures out a way to take the Sandman’s dream sand – the positive, pure golden sand that gives everyone happy dreams – and twist it into nightmares (which take the form of amorphous black stallions subject to Pitch’s command), creating fear within children.”

jude_law_as_pitch_2

And by design, the manner in which he operates is quite compelling, director Peter Ramsey says.

“We thought a lot about the way fear works in the real world, and the logic behind it. If you think, ‘I want to go outside, but there are some clouds in the sky and that means it might rain. If it rains, I might get a cold. If I get a cold…’ Pretty soon you’re not going outside and you’re missing all the best stuff in life because you let your fear snowball into something unhealthy. Fear shuts down your world. So we knew that we wanted a character that was alluring and could falsely convince you that being afraid was the only thing that made sense.”

jude_law_as_pitch_3

Steinberg agrees. “These iconic characters needed a worthy opponent. Peter, Bill Joyce, David Lindsay-Abaire and I spent a lot of time talking about our favorite villains in past movies. We all loved the feeling we had watching ‘The Wizard of Oz’ when we hid behind our bedroom doors, peeking our heads out to watch the Wicked Witch of the West. She was scary, but exciting and charismatic at the same time. We wanted to bring that dynamic to Pitch as well. So, he’s not a terrifying, moustache twirling villain. He has a lot of personality. He’s wicked, funny and smart.”

Lindsay-Abaire adds, “There’s a human side to Pitch, as well. Like our hero, Jack Frost, Pitch is a lonely soul who simply wants to be believed in. Unfortunately, he thinks the way to make that happen is through fear and intimidation.”

jude_law_as_pitch_4jpg

“When Jude Law’s name came up for the role, everybody’s bells just went off,” Ramsey says. “We listened to his voice in combination with some animated tests and we knew we had the right casting. Pitch moves through shadows. He moves on the edges of what you can see. Jude’s voice has this beautiful quality to it – we call it ‘the velvet touch of Pitch’ – and you just want to listen to it forever even when it’s telling you these terrible things.

“Pitch’s story is pretty compelling,” Ramsey continues. “He’s a guy who’s been on the bottom for a long time and who has now found a way to strike back and take power for himself. Jude has been able to flesh out the nuances of this character’s many layers. It’s a magnificent thing to listen to – the hair literally stands up on the back of your neck.”

jude_law_as_pitch_5_jpg

“The voice casting was, no pun intended, pitch perfect,” executive producer Guillermo del Toro says. “Jude brings fragility, refinement, intelligence and cunning – a lot of stuff that is beyond the lines – to his character. There’s a sense of isolation and loneliness in Pitch that is all Jude’s doing.”

‘Rise of The Guardians’ is released and distributed by United Intl. Pictures through Solar Entertainment . Corp.

Chris Pine as Jack Frost in ‘Rise of the Guardians’

Chris Pine who has emerged as one of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, is currently shooting “Jack Ryan,” slated for a December 2013 release, assuming the mantle of the Tom Clancy action hero previously portrayed on film by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. This holiday season Chris Pine provides the voice of the character of Jack Frost , a ghostly blue and white 14-year-old boy with no memory of his past apart from waking up one night floating in a frozen lake.
jack_frost_1
“They know Jack as a troublemaker, as this immature kind of guy,” says director Peter Ramsey, and by all appearances, he is. Jack is a 300-year-old prankster in a 17-year-old body, with the power to create frost, wind and snow. Happiest when he’s causing havoc, controlling winter with a swing, tap or touch of his staff, to him, a successful day is measured by how many snowballs he’s thrown, how many windows have been fogged and how many schools have closed after it’s been declared a snow day. He has no responsibilities, no one to answer to, and ultimately, at least in his mind, no purpose.
jack_frost_2jack_frost_5
“That bothers him,” says Ramsey. “Other than knowing that his name is Jack Frost, he doesn’t know anything about himself, much less what he’s meant to do in this world. To make matters worse, no one can see him and, unlike the Guardians, no one believes in him, so he’s kind of a loner and an outsider.”
jack_frost_4
To play the role of Jack, Ramsey and the “Guardians” team knew they had to find an actor that could demonstrate the conviction of a leading man – in many ways, “Guardians” is Jack’s story – but who could also be playful and vulnerable to express Jack’s range of emotions in the film. They found what they were looking for in actor Chris Pine.
jack_frost_7jack_frost_9
“We loved Chris in ‘Star Trek,’” says Ramsey. He’s exciting and smart. That comes through as soon as you see him on-screen. He’s got a twinkle in his eye that can be heard in his voice. He’s a leading man with energy, charisma and a sense of fun – all the qualities that Jack Frost has.”
For his part, Pine gravitated to the role because of Jack’s plight.
RISE OF THE GUARDIANS
“One of the journeys of this film is how Jack finds a home, friendship, community and a sense of purpose,” he says. “Jack will instigate snowball fights, desperately wanting kids to have fun but also wanting them to know that he’s the guy behind it, that he’s reason that they’re having a good time. Jack’s quest – to have connections with others and to find the answer to what are we put on this Earth to do – is something that’s so very human.”

Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance (PIFA)

The Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance (PIFA), made up of different organizations, netizens, and blogger, came together Tuesday to uphold freedom of expression and protest the recently signed Cybercrime Prevention Act or, as netizens call it, Cyber Martial Law. The group, carrying plain black placards and taping their mouths with black electrical tapes,
held a silent protest in front of the Supreme Court, in time for the en banc session.

“The Cybercrime Law is undemocratic and has negative implications on the have d right to
free speech and privacy. The Cybercrime Law is testing our country – whether we’re truly a
democracy or just a democracy on paper. It is then fitting the some dubbed it ‘cyber martial
law,’ Red Tani, president of Filipino Freethinkers, an organization part of PIFA said.

“Forty years ago, when Marcos declared martial law, we faced a similar test. I hope it doesn’t
take us as many years – or casualties – to get through this one,” Kenneth Keng, also of FilipinoFreethinkers, added.

To date, five TRO’s have been filed at the Supreme Court. Included are those from Sen. TeofistoGuigona III, UP College of Law professor Atty. JJ Disini, businessman Louis Biraogo, ALAMparty-list, and a group of journalists, bloggers, and lawyers including Alexander Adonis, Ellen Tordesillas, Gisela Cascolan, Harry Roque, Rommel Bagares and Gilbert Andres. PIFA will also be submitting another petition for the TRO of the Law on October 8. Among the points of the petition include: the law as a violation of the right to privacy, as a violation to equal protection, and as a violation to free speech.

“As members of the online community, we are stakeholders in the passage of the law. We
do not want the Data Privacy Act and the Cybercrime Prevention Act to be amended just so
our stakes can be inserted in either. A fresh start is required in order to embrace the online
community,” Ime Morales, founder of the Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippine said.

“It is ironic that while we are commemorating the 40th year since the declaration of Martial
Law and crying ‘Never again!, this law, which curtails freedom of speech, has been signed.
Real democracy allows the right to free speech as it is fundamental in people’s participation
in governance. Enacting this law is the death of the right,” said Ayeen Karunungan, council
member of Dakila – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism, an artist organization also part of PIFA.

An online black-out was also called by the group for people who can’t come to the protest but
who want to support the cause and have the means to do so online.

Philips: Headphones that are built to last

Each time you recklessly chuck your headphones in your backpack after every use, you know too well those headphones might not come back to you in one piece. Let’s face it: the backpack, combined with an active lifestyle, is an extreme environment for headphones. Adventurous and active music lovers always find it hard to make a pair of headphones last due to all the wear and tear from their activities.

“Loose cords and broken headbands are just some of the problems that many music lovers encounter with their headphones. Whether it gets broken in the backpack or in the mountains, people always end up disappointed with subpar durability,” says Ms. Angelia Oh, General Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Philippines.

The Construct

To address this issue, Philips and surf brand O’Neill teamed up to develop a range of headphones that are strong enough to endure extreme conditions. The Philips O’Neill The Construct SHO7205BK is part of this line.

According to Ms. Oh, The Construct is one of the most durable headphones in the market due to its material and construction. Its ultra flexible TR90 headband can withstand bends, stretches and twists without deforming or breaking. Its cable is just as tough and is also tangle-free. The headphone’s drivers are also protected with metal rings around the earcan and employ engineered safe release cans that allow it to weather hard impacts.

In terms of sound quality, The Construct holds its own, with Ms. Oh explaining that “The Construct delivers solid deep bass that’s crisp and powerful through 40mm drivers.” This means that users can still clearly hear their music regardless of their activity. And where comfort is concerned, Ms. Oh says that the ear cushions are soft and thick enough for isolation while the headband cover is made of soft fabric for added comfort.

Ms. Oh adds that The Construct can be enjoyed by a wide variety of listeners. “Sound lovers are not limited to commuters or office workers. They are everywhere. And we want everyone to take their music with them everywhere as well without the fear of it getting broken,” she remarks. “The Construct is a pair of headphones they can literally bring anywhere, even in the great outdoors.”

“Durable portable headphones are hard to come by. But this range of Philips O’Neill headphones were made to outlast, withstand and endure, with the consumers’ utmost needs in mind,” she concludes.
